Demonstrating effectiveness & saving time in Physiotherapy

Services are encouraged to carry out evaluations to show how effective they are. This is especially important when new approaches are introduced. The physiotherapy service has completed two evaluations to show how effective new ways of managing referrals are.

Physiotherapy in Portsmouth showed that a new referral telephone triage service for people who have contacted their GP with musculoskeletal pain could reduce the need for GP appointments by 35% which was equal to 135 appointments over 6 months.

Physiotherapy in Southampton showed that an online self-referral process saved time and reduced non-attendance rates from 7% to 4%.

Both of these evaluations showed that the new approach was effective and saved time for GPs, therapists and patients.
