Thinking about your aims and objectives

Working in partnership can lead to lots of fantastic outcomes but it is important to be clear about your goals from the outset.

This will really help you to identify the right audience, choose the right tools and have a joint understanding about what you are all hoping to achieve.

In Solent we recommend that aims and objectives follow the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) method. This means that the statement should clearly state:

  • By when
  • For (with) whom
  • What
  • By how much

The following video from Hospital Improvement Innovation Network (HIIN) does a really good job of describing the best way to write an aim statement:

Examples of aims and objectives

  1. By the end of March, we will have got feedback from at least 20% of service users about proposed changes to clinic times.
  2. By the end of April, we will have asked ten HIV clinic service users their views on the use of e-prescribing.
  3. By the end of August, we will have worked with families of the children accessing our autism service to improve our referral process.
